Free Museum Day at Free Library of Philadelphia Rare Books

Check out the Rare Book Department’s latest exhibition—In Our Nature: Flora and Fauna of the Americas—to see historic texts and stunning illustrations about the natural world that demonstrate humans’ relationships with native and introduced species.

In addition, the Rare Book Department will be showing History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Published between 1837 and 1844, History of the Indian Tribes of North America was a three volume collection of Native American biographies and accompanying portraits, and is now considered one of the finest examples of 19th century American lithography.  Folio sized hand colored lithographic renditions were made from each portrait, and James Hall supplied biographical text.   The original paintings were stored in the Smithsonian, and destroyed by fire in 1865; only 5 were rescued.

In addition, the Revolutionary War engravings, including one by Paul Revere are on view in the Elkins Room!
