Join us for a Celebration of Freedom!
As the nation’s first World Heritage city chosen worldwide in 2016 for its distinctive history, culture and contributions, Philadelphia is poised to roll out the red-white-and-blue welcome wagon for a glorious day at the historic site of the Declaration of Independence. The ceremony, which features the theme “Welcoming the World with Love: Drafting the Future” highlights a new generation of social activism and youth engagement — is free to the public. The Celebration of Freedom Ceremony is part of 12 hours of commemorations and celebrations that kicks off Independence Day. The ceremony will be an old-fashioned salute to our nation’s history connecting the tapestry of stars and stripes to a modern-day Philadelphia. The pageantry spotlights music, video presentations, speeches and – accompanied by a spirited musical rendition to celebrate America’s 242nd birthday.
The program will feature the community-service presentations of the Third Annual Magis Award and the Wawa Foundation Hero Award; Mayor Jim Kenney will be joined by City Representative Sheila Hess, the program’s stage emcee, and Cynthia MacLeod, Superintendent of Independence National Historical Park; The Philly POPS BIG Band, under the direction of Todd Ellison with the Delphaplaine McDaniel School as well as musicians John Polanco, Daniel McCain and Jasyn Brazoban, of the All-City Jazz Orchestra; Philadelphia City Council members and the North Philadelphia Nomads rugby team. The Celebration of Freedom Ceremony is produced by the City of Philadelphia/Office of City Representative in partnership with Independence National Historical Park and Wawa Welcome America Inc.
