The Philadelphia Freedoms of World TeamTennis invite you to virtually attend “A Philadelphia Freedom Celebration” presented by Anthem. Join this special event starring sports icon and social pioneer, Billie Jean King, as she takes you behind-the-scenes of the classic hit, “Philadelphia Freedom” which was written for her by good friend, Sir Elton John. Plus, there will be a special, never- before-seen performance of this song by members of The Philadelphia Orchestra led by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Special guests also include Freedoms’ Head Coach Craig Kardon and ATP Doubles star Fabrice Martin.

Billie Jean King

Named one of the “100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century” by Life magazine and a 2009 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Billie Jean King is the founder of the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, the co-founder of World TeamTennis and part of the ownership group of the Philadelphia Freedoms and the Los Angeles Dodgers. She founded the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s Tennis Association. In August 2006, the National Tennis Center, home of the US Open, was renamed the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in honor of her accomplishments on and off the court. In 2017, Fox Searchlight released the critically acclaimed film, Battle of the Sexes, which depicts the cultural and social impact of the groundbreaking match. In 2019 the Billie Jean King Main Library was dedicated in her hometown of Long Beach, California and in 2020 King was honored with the release of the Billie Jean King Barbie doll, part of Mattel’s Inspiring Women Series.

Philadelphia Freedoms

The Philadelphia Freedoms were co-founded in 1974 by tennis and cultural icon Billie Jean King, a member of the ownership group. The Freedoms are a gender-equal professional tennis team competing each summer in the World TeamTennis league. The Freedoms have a tradition of bringing the best tennis players in the world to Philly including Grand Slam Champions Andre Agassi, Venus and Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens, John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Jimmy Connors, Martina Navratilova and many more. In 2020, the Freedoms, led by this year’s Australian Open Champion, Sofia Kenin, will play their season at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. All of the team’s 2020 matches will be televised on CBS, CBS Sports Network, Tennis Channel or the ESPN Family of Networks or live-streamed on Facebook Watch, ESPN+ or WTT.com. In 2021, the Freedoms will return to Philadelphia at their new home, the Daskalakis Athletic Center on the campus of Drexel University.
